This Olympic Lifter Just Recorded the Heaviest Clean and Jerk in History
This week in Large Men Lifting Ungodly Amounts of Weight (as we mortals stare, legs, arms, backs, creaking just from watching): the heaviest clean and jerk ever recorded on film.
The Large Man, Georgian weightlifter and Olympian Lasha Talakhadze (6’6”, 371 pounds), has already come off a record-breaking 2019 IWF Weightlifting World Championships where he earned three gold medals and broke both the snatch world record (with 220kg or 485 pounds) and the clean and jerk record (with 264kg or 582 pounds). His total weight for the competition (484 kg or 1,067 pounds) was also a world record.
Talakhadze is currently training for the 2019 European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi, Georgia. He is already a four-time European Champion, and he earned an Olympic gold medal for the Men’s + 105kg at Rio in 2016.
Talakhadze apparently isn’t satisfied with those lofty marks. Barbend recently highlighted a video from lifting culture Instagram account hookgrip that claims to show Talakhadze completing an attempt at 276 kg (588.6 pounds). That would be the new record, if the lift would’ve been counted at a sanctioned competition.
Still, with the European Weightlifting Championships coming up and the 2020 Summer Olympics right around the corner, it’s likely that Talakhadze is in position break some more of his on records on the biggest stage pretty soon.
Until then, Talakhadze’s massive PR only counts on his training ledger and on Instagram. Tag your friends next time they say they did something impressive.
