ClassPass predicts how wellness will impact office culture in 2020
We hate to break it to you, but 2020 is under four months away!
And while some are still in mourning over summer’s end, we’re already getting our ducks in order for the upcoming year, including our wellness resolutions that many (ahem) like to leave to the last minute. As we close out the last few months of 2019, we’re looking at ClassPass’ list of predictions for 2020: These trends are not only good for the soul, but good for the office environment, too!
“Our goal at ClassPass is to make wellness accessible globally,” explained Nicole Wolfe, head of corporate programs for the fitness brand, to AOL Lifestyle. “We carefully track trends and changes in the industry so that we can not only be a leader, but also provide the best possible services to our members as the health and fitness landscape continues to evolve.”
Here’s what we can expect to take over the fitness landscape in 2020:
1. Wellness benefits will become critical to attracting and retaining top talent
Said Wolfe:
“From subsidized ClassPass memberships to healthy kitchen snacks, companies will increasingly add health and wellness benefits to their arsenal of must-have perks to attract and retain top talent. Facebook, Google, Gatorade and Glossier, are just a few of the companies that have already partnered with ClassPass to offer fitness memberships to employees around the globe. These leading employers recognize that demonstrating a commitment to their employees’ well-being is not only the right thing to do; it’s good business as well.”

2. Working out will become a (work) team-member sport
“In our always-on culture, the traditional boundaries between colleagues and personal friendships are continuing to blur. Fortunately, at the same time, more millennials are choosing wellness over drinks. Colleague workouts are replacing boozy happy hours, as more team leaders are thinking about how to create positive and inclusive team-building activities. On a related note, team outings to the pizzeria are increasingly being replaced by team outings to spin class — or trampoline class. Working out with colleagues increases camaraderie, motivation and culture. Leaders should get behind this positive trend by offering onsite classes or fun challenges for their teams and by providing flexibility for employees to workout during the point in the day when they feel the most motivated.”
3. Workouts for the soul will go mainstream
“In 2020, we’ll continue to see an uptick in workouts focusing on mindfulness and mental health. From guided soundbath meditations to breathing classes, more fitness studios will add options that prioritize spiritual wellbeing. The more creative the offerings, the more they’ll continue to grow in popularity. Professionals need to find tools to manage stress and anxiety — and that goes beyond just breaking a sweat. Our minds are as important as our bodies to keep us healthy. We will see a growing trend over the next year of professionals opting into ClassPass wellness options and prioritizing self-care at every level.”
4. Peak wellbeing will overtake peak performance. Wellbeing will be increasingly embraced as a long-term goal
“Fitness goals and personal milestones are increasingly being balanced with self-care, repair and restoration. That’s why we expect stretching classes to emerge as one of the fastest growing fitness genres in 2020. Afterall, fitness is not a short term goal, and therefore we can’t focus all our energies on what we can get our bodies to do today. We need to maintain them in good enough condition to keep working for us for years and decades to come. In addition to classes that help us to stay centered, we will gravitate to classes that help us to meet the physical demands of our work and personal lives. Stretching classes are among the many levers we’ll seek in 2020 to maintain our health and wellbeing within healthy limits.”
