I Let My Naturally White Hair Grow Out for a Year, and I Love the Results
We enjoy a good hair-transformation moment here at Allure. Whether someone decides to go platinum blonde or explore a vibrant hue, we love to see the process. But for Julie, aka @whitesalright on Instagram, her hair transformation is a little different, since she decided to start back in March 2019 — and it's still going.
"I decided to grow out my hair when dye wouldn't stick to my hair anymore. It just left it looking translucent, and the only way to cover my roots was to go darker," Julie tells Allure. And that makes sense, according to New York City-based colorist Rachel Bodt, who says that white hair can be stubborn when it comes to being dyed.
Julie also got sick of having to color her roots every 10 to 14 days, and once she saw her new natural hair color for the first time in 30 years, she thought, This white hair isn't bad at all. And we agree — not only is it not bad, but it's also beautiful. Julie's platinum white hair is something people pay a lot of money for these days, so if she's able to grow it in naturally (and for free), why not just let it do its thing?
Julie shares that she was suffering from a very dry scalp, and her skin was sore along the edges of her face, which she believes was caused by all dye she has used throughout her life. But now, she's doing great, and says her hair feels healthier than ever.
If you're thinking about letting your hair color go all-natural, Bodt suggests investing in a filtering showerhead. “Gray hair is porous. It can really yellow from pollution or mineral deposit. Purchasing a good showerhead will help remove these pollutants." She also recommends using an apple cider vinegar rinse to maintain the bright-white pigment.
This transition hasn't been easy for Julie, but the support she gets has been uplifting. "Sharing my process on Instagram and seeing other people's road to white hair has been the biggest help in getting through this time in my life."
