What You've Always Wanted to Know About Yeast Infections (but Never Asked)
Did you know that 75 percent of people with vaginas will get a yeast infection in their lifetime? Or maybe even more importantly: Half will get more than one.
Yeast infections aren’t exactly the most wonderful companion to have. Anyone who’s had one will attest they tend to be itchy and irritating. As its name implies, a yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina, and one can flare up for tons of different reasons, like pregnancy, using antibiotics or even sitting in a wet bathing suit or exercise clothes for too long.
Luckily, treating yeast infections doesn’t have to be a huge hassle. You’ll need an over-the-counter medicine, preferably one that targets all five of the most common types of yeast infections. And in case it’s not obvious, it’s always good to talk to your doctor whenever you’re having vaginal issues so they can make sure you’re healthy and that your suspected diagnosis is correct — especially if you’ve never had a yeast infection before.
