The Absurd Reason Why This Model Is Receiving Rape And Death Threats For An Adidas Ad
Unfortunately, it seems that some people (cough, mostly men) have yet to wrap their heads around the fact that women have the right to do whatever they want. And that includes whatever they want to do with their body hair.
Case in point: Swedish model, photographer and artist, Arvida Byström, has received a torrent of abuse – including rape and death threats – for daring to expose her unshaven legs in a recent Adidas advertisement.
In the video, she discusses the idea of femininity and how our society’s concept of it is struggling to evolve. A point comprehensively proven in the comments section on YouTube.
Comments still up on the video include ‘horrible! Burn it with fire!’, ‘shave your legs b*tch’, ‘f*** off feminist scum’, ‘disgusting’, ‘good luck getting a boyfriend’ and ‘Swedish anti-rape tactic’.
Arvida says she’s received much worse in private messages on Instagram.
“My photo from the @adidasoriginals superstar campaign got a lot of nasty comments last week,” she wrote in a post on the platform.
“Me being such an abled, white, cis body with its only nonconforming feature being a lil leg hair. Literally I’ve been getting rape threats in my DM inbox. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to not posses all these privileges and try to exist in the world. Sending love and try to remember that not everybody has the same experiences being a person.”
Fortunately, she’s been receiving plenty of praise too.
“Also thanks for all the love,” she wrote, “Got a lot of that too.”
