I think we can all agree that Emilia Clarke is straight-up stunning, but the Game of Thrones actress recently admitted that her self-esteem took a hit after she underwent two brain surgeries.
Emilia, 32, recently opened up to Stylist about how she felt about herself following two brain aneurysms—the first of which caused the actress to have a stroke in 2011.
“I was so full of drugs from being in the hospital that I had a lot of water retention, and one half of my face was quite swollen,” Emilia said. “I felt so deeply unattractive.” But eventually Emilia said she realized why she felt that way. “What I can see now is that I could see the pain behind my eyes. And no amount of anything can cover that.”
Emilia said she saw the pain every time she looked in the mirror, so she simply stopped looking at her reflection when she put on makeup. “I found it very, very difficult,” she said. “I used to put on makeup without looking in the mirror, which probably made me look a lot worse.”

The actress, who plays female badass Danyeres Targaryen, revealed her surgeries in late March in an essay for The New Yorker. After her 2011 stroke, which occurs when she was working out, Emilia underwent a three-hour surgery. “When I woke, the pain was unbearable. I had no idea where I was,” she wrote. “My field of vision was constricted. There was a tube down my throat and I was parched and nauseated.”
Emilia left the hospital a month after she was admitted—and was back on the Game of Thrones set in a matter of weeks. But, after filming the third season of the show, Clarke had a brain scan that revealed that another aneurysm she had had doubled in size—which meant another surgery. This time, parts of her skull ended up being replaced with titanium, and she spent another month in the hospital.
It’s been six years since her last surgery, and now, Emilia says she tries to wear less makeup—a byproduct of how she first felt about herself after surgery. “My face didn’t change, but my feelings about myself changed,” she told Stylist. “It’s being inspired. If you look emaciated and tired and full of self-loathing you do not look beautiful, no matter how perfect your hair and make-up is. We should be celebrating having a giggle a bit more. Laughter is free as well, which is good.”
She added: “When you can look at yourself in the eyes and feel OK with what’s looking back at you, then what more do you need?” Well said, Emilia.
