Jason Statham and John Mayer Nail the #BottleCapChallenge
Internet challenges are usually pretty lame. Remember planking? The less said, the better.
Every once in a while, however, social media is blessed with a genuinely cool or funny concept that gives just about everyone with a smartphone and an Instagram handle a chance to join in on the fun. The latest of these is the #bottlecapchallenge, and if you can pull it off, it looks downright awesome.
The premise is simple, but the execution is extremely tough. Grab a bottle, preferably with a long neck and a sturdy screw top. Then, throw a spinning back kick to unscrew the cap with a slight touch of your foot as it passes—without whacking the bottle into oblivion. Sounds tough, right?
The challenge first appears to have gained traction when ACRONYM designer Errolson Hugh posted a video of his successful attempt to Instagram, and challenged MMA champ Max Holloway to try it next.

Be curious my friends! #challengeaccepted #bottlecapchallenge Passing this on to our guy @johnmayer …. hey John if you can’t complete this challenge @erlsn.acr and I decided you have to come to Hawaii after your tour and kick it with us until you complete it! 🦶🍾😅 🙏⚡🤙 👊

Once Holloway unsurprisingly nailed the challenge, he passed it along to, of all people, musician John Mayer.

First @erlsn.acr did it. Then @blessedmma followed, and challenged me. I now challenge @jasonstatham. #bottlecapchallenge

Mayer popped the top clear off the bottle, then called on the Transporter himself, Jason Statham. The actor, who’s currently promoting his new Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbes and Shaw took a break from junket life to execute the concept flawlessly.

#bottlecapchallenge #challengeaccepted @erlsn.acr This thing landed on my head from @johnmayer but will quickly go to a couple of fellas we’ve seen do push ups badly. All yours @guyritchie and @jmoontasri

Next up, if they take Statham’s provocation: director Guy Ritchie and MMA fighter James Moonstasri.
But these famous guys weren’t the only people posting videos of themselves kicking bottles. The trend is taking off on Instagram, as everyone is trying to get in on the action. My personal favorite comes from Muay Thai champion John Wayne Parr, who used his elite kicking skills to put his own spin on the concept with a can:

After seeing the @blessedmma challenge I not only decided to give it a go, but to raise the bar in opening a @monsterenergy can 😈. Sorry Max. I remember the first time I threw a spinning kick 🤣. #monsterenergy #bottlecapchallenge #shitjustgotreal

Want to take on the #BottleCapChallenge yourself? Most of these guys appear to have used glass liquor bottles, but we suggest that you grab a sturdy plastic one instead in case your attempts go wrong. Also, unless you’re a martial arts expert, make sure that you’re wearing shoes have plenty of space to spin and recover from your attempt. After all, you’re trying to pull of something that looks really cool here—not end up in one of our #FridayFails videos.
