Type 2 diabetes symptoms: Itching in this area of the body may be a sign of the condition

Type 2 diabetes is a serious health condition that needs to be diagnosed in order for treatment to begin. And one itchy area could be the clue that you need.

The lifelong condition occurs when blood sugar levels are too high.

This could be because the body has become insulin resistant or the pancreas isn’t making adequate amounts of the hormone.

Diabetes UK, a charity dedicated to the awareness of the condition, confirmed that it’s “important to catch the symptoms as early as possible to limit damage to the body”.

So, if you start to notice that your groin area is particularly itchy, it could be a sign of type 2 diabetes.

Genital itchiness could be the result of a yeast infection – and both sexes get it.

Regular yeasts infections are a sign of type 2 diabetes, as abnormally high blood sugar levels can present an ideal condition for yeast to grow.

The charity defines genital itching as “itching, burning or redness/soreness in and around the vagina or penis”.

What’s a yeast infection?

Commonly known as thrush, women and men get certain symptoms of the condition.

The NHS pointed out that women can get white vaginal discharge (similar to cottage cheese in appearance), which doesn’t usually smell.

Women may also experience itching and irritation around the vagina, as well as soreness and stinging during sex or when urinating.

Men can also experience irritation, burning and redness, but around the head of the penis and under the foreskin.

They too may have a white discharge that resembles cottage cheese, and has an unpleasant smell.

There may also be a bit of difficulty pulling back the foreskin.

Not usually known, but thrush can also affect other areas of the skin, such as the armpits, groin and between the fingers.

This usually causes a red, itchy or painful rash that scales over with white or yellow discharge.

Thrush is caused by a fungus called candida that is normally harmless.

But the fungus can begin to grow if you have poorly controlled diabetes.

Diabetes UK outlined other common symptoms of type 2 diabetes to be aware of.

This includes fatigue, feeling nauseous, and the slow healing of wounds.

Additionally, symptoms of type 2 diabetes are feeling dizzy, blurred vision and weight loss.

It’s not unheard of for people with this condition to feel the need to urinate more frequently than normal.

This is because the body attempts to remove excess blood sugar from the body.

Moreover, this may lead to dehydration and so one may experience excess thirst that can’t be satisfied.
