Scheana Marie and Kaitlyn Bristowe Talk Getting Skinny Shamed and Their Past Eating Disorders
Scheana Marie and Kaitlyn Bristowe have a lot in common. They both gained fame on reality TV, and that led to big social media followings — and plenty of online bullying. Now the duo are speaking out about dealing with people who shame them for looking thin.
Marie, who is currently on Vanderpump Rules, joined former Bachelorette Bristowe’s podcast and opened up about her social media critics.
“The other night, I was in Vegas and I posted a photo and I’m naturally a petite person…I eat a lot. I’ve already had a couple of meals today. I can’t wait for my next one. But my waist, especially the angle, was really tiny,” Marie, 33, said on the Off the Vine podcast. “It was like 900 comments like ‘anorexic’ or ‘too skinny.’ When did that become okay?”
Marie said that people shouldn’t judge others’ bodies in any scenario.
“It’s not okay to say someone is too fat but it’s okay to say someone is too skinny? It’s okay to make fun of them and assume I have an eating disorder, which I struggled with in college and I don’t anymore?” she asked.
Bristowe, 33, chimed in, and said that she has the same problem.
“It’s unbelievable to me that someone can go on someone’s photo and comment on their weight,” she said. “It’s not healthy for anyone. I get comments all the time about my weight just because I’m really tiny.”
Both stars have previously spoken out about body image issues. Marie first opened up about her eating disorder in 2017, which she said she had in her early 20s.
“Thin was in 11 years ago,” she said, adding that she stopped eating and took laxatives to get her weight down. “I remember stepping on the scale the day of my college graduation, and I was like 102. I was like, ‘Yes, I’m almost under 100.’ I was proud of myself. I was doing any quick fix to get the weight off.”
Marie said that her weight yo-yoed for a few years, but she’s now focused on her health and fitness.
Meanwhile, Bristowe hit a breaking point last February with her body shamers, and decided to call them out on Twitter.
“I dare any one of you sad psychopath narcissists to say to my face what you say about me on Instagram photos. See what happens,” she tweeted in Feb. 2018. “F— off telling me my healthy body looks sick. You’re the sick ones. I’ve had enough. Your words don’t hurt me, they piss me off.”
During the podcast episode with Marie, Bristowe said that the online commenters are critical of everything. Along with the skinny shaming, she also gets attacked for dating fellow Bachelor Nation member Jason Tartick because people think she moved on too quickly from her ex-fiancé Shawn Booth.
“I just got out of a relationship and in people’s minds, I’ve moved on quickly but nobody really knows what the story was with the relationship for the last year and I’m getting hated on right now for being happy,” Bristowe said. “You’re a happy bitch too soon.”
“You can save starving children in Africa and people could come after you,” Marie said, in agreement.
