No single food or drink is a miracle worker but there is encouraging evidence to suggest specific items provide numerous health benefits, making them a worthy addition to any healthy diet.
Drinking pomegranate juice, for example, has been shown to provide a buffer against the world’s most life-threatening diseases.
The juice, derived from the popular red fruit, has been shown to offer protection against cancer and heart disease.
Take prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men in the UK.
From what is understood about the cancer, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a blood marker for prostate cancer.
Men whose PSA levels double in a short period of time are at an increased risk of death from prostate cancer.
A human study found that drinking eighty ounces (237 ml) of pomegranate juice per day slowed down the PSA doubling time from 15 months to 54 months, thereby reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Pomegranate juice’s protective benefits for the heart is partly attributed to it impact on LDL cholesterol.
LDL cholesterol is a fatty substance that clogs up the arteries, choking the heart of vital blood and oxygen supply.
Starving the heart of blood and oxygen is a process known as heart disease and this is the primary cause of heart attacks.
One study investigated the effects of pomegranate juice in people with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.
The study noted significant reductions in LDL cholesterol, as well as other improvements.

Pomegranate juice has also been shown — in both animal and human studies — to protect LDL cholesterol particles from oxidation, one of the key steps in the pathway towards heart disease
What’s more, pomegranate juice has been shown to reduce high blood pressure, another precursor to heart disease.
In one study, people with hypertension had a significant reduction in blood pressure after consuming five ounces (150 ml) of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks.
Other studies have found similar effects, especially for systolic blood pressure, which is the higher number in a blood pressure reading.
Systolic blood pressure indicates your risk of having a heart attack so it is imperative to keep this number in check.
