High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
According to the NHS, the condition affects one in four adults living in the UK.
Symptoms include headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness and even chest pains.

Berries are a natural plant compound which means they’re very good for the heart.
In a study with BMJ, polyphenol-rich foods, such as berries, are associated with a reduction in cardiovascular diseases.
All participants completed a four-week trial and with one group consuming berries, while others avoided the fruit.
The study proved that increasing polyphenol improved the risk of cardiovascular diseases in hypertensive participants.
What is high blood pressure?
Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers, the systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.
The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.
According to the NHS, blood pressure readings between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep it under control.

The only way to know your blood pressure is to have a test.
You can get your blood pressure tested at a number of places, including:
- At your GP surgery
- At some pharmacies
- As part of your NHS Health Check
- In some workplaces
