Coronavirus cure: Is there a cure for coronavirus? Trump claims he was ‘cured’

Coronavirus is a vital threat facing people around the globe. So far the COVID-19 pandemic has seen more than 36 million become infected and 1,066,523 deaths. After confirming a positive diagnosis of coronavirus last week, USA President Donald Trump promised to share the “cure” he had received for covid to all Americans for free. But is there really a cure?

Mr Trump returned to the Oval Office on Wednesday less than a week after testing positive for the virus.

His physician Dr Sean Conley confirmed he had experienced no coronavirus symptoms for more than 24 hours and had been fever-free for more than four days.

In a video message, Mr Trump said all Americans should have access to the treatments he received.

He said: “When I went in, I wasn’t feeling so hot. They gave me Regeneron and it was like unbelievable – I felt good immediately.”

What is Regeneron treatment?

The Regeneron treatment is an antibody cocktail which is currently being tested as a way to help treat coronavirus.

Antibodies are proteins which the body creates to help protect it against diseases.

Initial results suggest antibody therapies can help to lower the level of COVID-19 in the body and shorten hospital stays.

The Regeneron treatment, which Mr Trump has been administered, is a cocktail of two different antibodies which have been identified as helpful to treat the virus.

The US President hailed the Regeneron treatment he received as a “cure”.

Mr Trump said: “I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president because I feel great.

“I feel perfect. This was a blessing from God that I caught it. This was a blessing in disguise.”

He added: “We have hundreds of thousands of doses that are just about ready.

“I have emergency use authorisation all set and we’ve got to get it signed now – and you’re gonna get better, you’re gonna get better really fast.”

Some experts questioned Mr Trump using the drug which is relatively untried, despite promising trial results.

The results involved 275 patients whose condition seemed to improve after being administered the treatment.

The company said only a small number of patients have tried the drug and the data has yet to be peer-reviewed.

But many medical experts believe a synthetic antibody treatment is the best way to tackle the virus.

Mr Trump received other treatments in hospital as well.

Doctors have claimed there is no evidence that Regeneron treatment caused him to recover.

The US President was given two types of treatments, those which directly attacks the virus and those which calm the immune system.

Mr Trump was given the steroid Dexamethasone which calms the immune system if given at the right time.

A trial of the drug in the UK found the benefit kicked in at the point people need oxygen, which Mr Trump did briefly receive.

The US leader was also given the antiviral drug Remdesivir, first developed as a treatment for Ebola.

It works by confusing the virus and disrupting its ability to make thousands of copies of itself.

Regeneron’s stock price rose by more than four percent in premarket trading on Thursday.

This increase in stock price followed after the company submitted an “emergency use authorization” request to the US Food and Drug Administration for its antibody treatment.

In a statement, the company said: “If an EUA is granted the government has committed to making these doses available to the American people at no cost and would be responsible for their distribution.”

Currently, Regeneron has around does for 50,000 people, but “expect” to have does for 300,000 people within the next few months.
