Quorn ‘builds muscle twice as fast as milk protein’, study claims
Good news, vegans – Quorn mycoprotein can build even more muscle than milk protein.
The effects of the meat substitute were recently examined by the University of Exeter.
And according to research, munching on Quorn sausages could be more effective for bulking up than the dairy product is.
The University of Exeter study measured the impacts of mycoprotein, which is found in Quorn.
Researchers saw how the nutrient worked on 20 healthy men after they exercised.
Following a strenuous workout, they noted information on participants’ muscle growth rates.
The experiment showed those who consumed milk protein saw their muscle-building abilities increase by up to 60%.
While these results were promising, they weren’t as dramatic as those experienced by those who ingested Quorn.
These participants had double the muscle growth rates of milk protein drinkers.
Dr Benjamin Wall, one of the study authors, said results are good news for vegan fitness fans.
He said: “These results are very encouraging when we consider the desire of some individuals to choose non-animal derived sources of protein to support muscle mass maintenance or adaptations with training.
“Our data show that mycoprotein can stimulate muscles to grow faster in the hours following exercise compared with a typical animal comparator protein (milk protein) – we look forward to seeing whether these mechanistic findings translate to longer term training studies in various populations.”
