Watch Olympian Ryan Hall Flip a Tractor Tire the Entire Length of a Football Field
When he’s not busy training his wife Sara to qualify for the Olympics, distance running legend (and former Olympian himself) Ryan Hall stays active pursuing all manner of fitness challenges—often of his own making.
In his latest Instagram video, for instance, Hall, 38, decided to see if he had what it took to flip a tractor tire the entire length of a football field. Why, you may ask? Well, simply put: Because it was there.
“I had never flipped a tire before, but decided to give this challenge a try when I saw a big tire at the track after pacing Sara through a workout,” he wrote in a lengthy caption to the post. “Had a lot of fun with this one. I love finding new challenges to take on, especially one that combines strength and endurance like this.”
Understandably, Hall says, the challenge left him spent—citing his cardio as a limiting factor. Given his athletic history, the irony of this shortcoming wasn’t lost on him, either. “It makes sense considering how slanted my training and nutrition has been towards strength gains the last five plus years. I find myself still laughing at this reality considering my background in endurance,” he said.
Likewise, Hall says, he’s going to keep working on his cardio for the next few months and then transition back into strength-only training. That combination will be crucial to one of his other long-term fitness goals: Deadlifting 500 pounds and running a mile all in under 5 minutes, which he is currently training for along with fellow Olympian Nick Symmonds.

In the end, Hall still finished the impromptu challenge in an impressive—and semi-official, according to his laid-back pacer—time of 7:10. (Perhaps having a part-time job pacing an active, record-setting marathoner hasn’t limited his cardio as much as Hall suspects.)
He concluded the post by issuing a challenge to his followers to give it a shot themselves, you know, should they happen across a gigantic tire on nearby track anytime soon.
“If you’re looking for a fun challenge,” he wrote, “give this one a try and comment your time.”
