Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body can’t produce enough insulin, can’t use insulin, or a mix of both. In diabetes, sugar levels in the blood go up and this can cause complications if left uncontrolled. Experiencing any of these four sexual problems could indicate your blood sugar levels are dangerously high and changes to your lifestyle needs to be implemented. What are they?

Having high sugar levels for a period of time can damage your blood vessels and nerves, including the ones that supply your penis, said Diabetes UK.

The site continued: “This can restrict the amount of blood flowing to your sexual organs, so you can lose some sensation.

“This could mean you have difficulty getting aroused, both physically and in how you feel.

“Sex can be an important part of our lives, but it’s something we still struggle to talk about.

“Getting the time and support to talk about sexual problems with a healthcare professional is one of your 15 essential health checks.”

Medical News Today warns of the danger signs of high blood sugar levels found in men’s genitals which could include:

  • Redness, swelling, and itching around the head of the penis
  • An unpleasant odour
  • A white, lumpy appearance to the skin of the penis
  • Soreness and discomfort during sex

Erectile dysfunction

In a study published in Wiley Online Library, high prevalence of erectile dysfunction in type 2 diabetes was investigated.

Erectile dysfunction may be common among men with diabetes, but its prevalence is still debated, noted the study.

It added: “We aimed to assess the relative prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes searching major databases from inception to November 2016 for studies reporting erectile dysfunction in men with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

“The prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes overall was 52.5 percent.

“Erectile dysfunction is common in diabetes, affecting more than half of men with the condition and with a prevalence odd of approximately 3.5 times more than controls.”

The study concluded that screening and appropriate intervention for men with erectile dysfunction is warranted.

Talking frankly with your doctor about erectile dysfunction or any other sexual or urologic complications is essential.

By undergoing a simple blood test, a diagnosis of diabetes is made with the appropriate lifestyle changes recommended by a healthcare professional.

Investigating the cause of your sexual problems can also help you discover other undiagnosed problems.
