More than a billion people worldwide experience migraines. A migraine is an extremely painful primary headache disorder and usually produces symptoms which are far more intense and debilitating than headaches. A new study has made a startling discovery regarding the power of foods in preventing this painful condition. The patient, who has suffered with the debilitating condition for over a decade, found certain food types helped him to completely get rid of his migraines. What worked?

Green vegetable-based diets have amazing benefits for recurring migraines says new study.

Published in BMJ Case Reports, scientists say they have discovered a link between diet and migraines.

It has been found that a patient, who had been suffering from severe headaches for many years, could successfully get rid of migraines through diet.

The study involved a participant who had been suffering with chronic migraines for nearly a decade.

According to the study, green vegetables can dramatically increase beta-ketone levels and reduce chronic inflammation.

After a follow-up of about two months, researchers found that the migraines were significantly reduced.

The patient suffered with around one migraine a month having previously found himself unwell with four to six monthly attacks.

After adopting a plant-based diet, the patient completely eliminated his migraines.

The study concluded that green leafy vegetables including spinach, kale, watercress and broccoli could help to significantly reduce migraines.

Health experts are now calling for more research into diet and migraines.

Writing in BMJ Case Reports, the 60-year-old patient, whose identity was not disclosed, said: “Before I changed my diet, I was suffering six to eight debilitating migraines a month, each lasting up to 72 hours.

“Most days, I was either having a migraine or recovering from one.

“However, within one month of beginning a nutrient-dense plant-based diet that included primarily lots of dark-green leafy vegetables, fruits, beans, oatmeal, and a daily green smoothie, I was able to get off both medications.

“Now the migraine medications have expired, and I have not had a migraine in seven years.

“I can’t even remember the last time I had a headache. I am no longer a prisoner in my own body. I have my life back.”

Foods which are said to increase a person’s migraines include:

  • Excessive coffee
  • Red wine
  • Aged cheeses
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits
  • Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners
  • Yeast
  • Egg whites
  • Salmon
  • Iced tea.
