Subaru of America Inc. is furthering its commitment to animals in need and its partnership with the ASPCA® this month by creating the first-ever National Make A Dog’s Day on October 22, 2019. On this day, Subaru and the ASPCA encourage dog lovers nationwide to “do something extra special for their furry best friends.” But this message doesn’t stop with our pets at home. Subaru is also focusing its efforts on finding homes for shelter dogs who may have a more difficult time finding loving, safe homes—this includes dogs who may have special needs or may have a few more candles on their birthday cakes.

In celebration of National Make A Dog’s Day, Subaru will be donating $10 to the ASPCA for every item purchased from the ASPCA’s National #MakeADogsDay AmazonSmile Charity Lists between October 14-22, 2019, up to $250,000.

“Pets play a big role in our lives and the lives of Subaru owners. While we support efforts all year dedicated to the betterment of animals’ lives, in October, we make a concerted effort to help shelter pets—particularly the hard-to-adopt ones—find loving homes,” said Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. “We are proud to establish the official National Make A Dog’s Day on October 22 and shine a light on the hundreds of thousands of dogs who are often times passed over including those with special needs.”

Approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters in the United States annually. That’s one dog every ten seconds. While these numbers have been declining, providing a loving home for a shelter dog in need continues to be a great way to make a dog’s day. Visit your local shelter or rescue if interested in adopting.

There are plenty of additional ways to make a dog’s day, too, such as a long walk, a new toy, or a treat!  While those ideas probably come to mind with ease, some other ideas are just as important to make sure your dog is happy and healthy:

  • Regular check-ups and vaccinations
  • Spay or neuter your pet. Beyond the health benefits, unplanned puppies cause the population in shelters to increase.

How to Observe #MakeADogsDay

Celebrating National Make A Dog’s Day is simple! If you’re ready to adopt, visit a shelter or rescue near you, find a canine companion who best suits your lifestyle, and make a dog’s day through adoption!

If you aren’t ready to adopt just yet, you can also consider stopping by a shelter and volunteering. You’ll be sure to make a shelter dog’s day just by spending a little extra time with them and helping to make sure they are prepared to join a safe and loving home.

You can also make a dog’s day by visiting the ASPCA’s National #MakeADogsDay AmazonSmile Charity Lists! Not only do these lists provide invaluable resources for pets in need, but Subaru will also be donating $10 to the ASPCA for every item purchased through these lists between October 14-22, 2019, up to $250,000!

Participating Subaru retailers will be collecting new pet supplies throughout the month of October as well. Check your local Subaru retailers to join the effort.

And if you’re the owner of a beloved dog, take some extra time to make your dog’s day! Then post a photo of your happy dog on social media using #MakeADogsDay to share it with the world.
