The many positive effects of Folates
Folic acid has numerous beneficial properties and promote health in a variety of ways. The Vitamin helps couples to get a child, and already in the Embryo in the mother’s belly for better health. On the other hand it protects against colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease, by for example, causes a slight reduction in blood pressure. An expert explains why Folate is so important to us.
Professor Dr. Berthold Koletzko is the Chairman of the Foundation for children’s health. In a recent recommendation, he explains the many benefits of a regular folate intake. Thus, the addition of folic acid in bread and Pasta in the United States and Canada led to a decline in colorectal cancer cases by 20 per cent. Also for high blood pressure folic acid effect show, because it was for the removal of the vessel-damaging Homocysteine in the blood are responsible, and in a slight reduction in blood pressure.
Professor Koletzko speaks to the folic acid, even a key role in the fight against heart attack and stroke. He refers to a study from China, which has shown that folic acid and B Vitamin supplements could reduce with folic acid stroke risk of the Participants by up to 20 percent. A further study showed that the combination of folic acid and zinc increased the sperm number of Participants to 70 percent, and thus the Chance to father a child.
Folic acid – for baby vitamin
The expert advises, in particular, Pregnant women to increased intake because folic acid can protect the child from severe damage. “Pregnant women should eat a folatreich and, in addition, a folic acid Supplement to take”, the Council of the Foundation for children’s health in a recent statement. The Vitamin is an important building block in the formation of new cells and therefore many essential processes in the body of the unborn child involved.
Folates protect the unborn child from deformities
The Professor points out that folic acid can protect against a whole range of malformations. The neural tube defects such as Spina bifida (open spine) and hydrocephalus (“water on the brain include, for example,”). But also heart defects, malformations of the urinary tract or the formation of a cleft lip-cleft palate (“hare lip”) can be prevented by folic acid-revenues during the pregnancy. In addition, the risk of anaemia is reduced “at birth and the risk of premature birth reduced,” says Koletzko. The Foundation of children’s health recommends a daily intake of at least 400 micrograms of folic acid just before and during the pregnancy.
Folates in the diet
“Folates are collective terms for the naturally-occurring Form of the water-soluble B-Vitamin that is for human health indispensable”, explains the expert. Folic acid does not do so in nature. It is the synthetically be produced in the Form of Vitamin B9. Who wants to feed folatreich, should rely on plenty of raw vegetables, fruits, leafy vegetables, cabbage, Broccoli, lettuce, fennel, spinach, asparagus, whole grains, Sauerkraut and potatoes. Practically all vegetables and salads, where the leaves of the Plant are eaten, to serve as a folate source.
Caution – Folate will be lost quickly
“Unfortunately, the body is able to utilize only a portion of the contained folic acid,” said Professor Koletzko. The Vitamin is very heat and light sensitive and for a long time to cook or warm the food is easily lost. So the body can utilize only about 50 percent of the contained in the food Folates. Synthetic folic acid can be recycled to approximately 85 percent.
Food additives in USA and Canada is already a Standard
Since 1998, flour, bread, rolls, Breakfast cereals, rice and pasta with folic acid in the United States and Canada and in around 100 other countries, by default, is enriched. This led to a large decline in neural tube defects and congenital heart defects. In Germany, the number of these abnormalities remained, however, for years the same high. (vb)
